Stags Champion Region 7-AAAAA Baseball Team | Preparation sports


The Berkeley High School baseball team is area champions again.

The Stags mathematically claimed their seventh region title since 2013 with a 12-10 win at Stratford on April 22, moving to 9-0 against 7-AAAAA region foes heading into the final week of the regular season.

Berkeley (18-3) finishes with three games against Cane Bay (April 25 (H), 27 (A) and 29 (H)) before opening the Class AAAAA playoffs at home on May 3 against the fourth team region 8-AAAAA square. They host either the runner-up from Region 5 or the third-place team from Region 6 on May 5.

In the last of three games against Stratford, Berkeley rallied from a 6-1 deficit to keep their region mark unblemished. The Stags rallied in the top of the fifth to equalize, 6-6, before opening it with six more points in the top of the seventh.

Berkeley shortstop Hayden Newbold homered and drove in five runs on two hits and first baseman Miller McGuire was 3 for 4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Newbold’s three-run homer early seventh-place Berkeley leads, 9-6.

Stags second baseman Gavin Edens hit in a pair and Connor Barham went 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Receiver Mason Salisbury and outfielder Tristan Gerideau scored two runs.

Ian Salters took the victory in relief for Berkeley, pitching 2.1 innings with four strikeouts.

The series sweep follows a pair of tight losses to Lexington (2-1) and Brookland-Cayce (8-7) at the South Carolina Diamond Invitational. The Stags had won 11 times in a row.

Berkeley is ranked second in class AAAAA by the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association. Blythewood is No. 1, Lexington No. 3, River Bluff No. 4 and Hillcrest No. 5.

Clover, JL Mann, Carolina Forest, St. James and Socastee/Summerville round out the poll’s top 10.
