Rain continues to drench the DC area on Saturday; dry and fresh mother’s day expected on sunday


The wet weather continues Saturday to start our Mother’s Day weekend, a day after the DC area experienced torrential rains and severe storms.

Multiple flood watches and warnings are in effect for the DC area throughout the day Saturday as parts of the area are expected to receive between 1 and 2 inches of additional rain. Be sure to plan Saturday activities in advance and grab an umbrella or poncho before heading out!

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning through 4 p.m. Saturday for several DMV areas, including DC, Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, Arlington County, City of Alexandria, City of Fairfax, City of Manassas, Fairfax County, Prince William County. . The NWS also issued a flood watch through noon Saturday for several areas, including DC and parts of Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Baltimore, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County and Prince William County. Although the rain will continue throughout the day, there is no forecast threat of severe storms.

Saturday’s highs will remain cooler as they’re only expected to hit the mid-50s. 30 miles per hour later in the day.

Saturday’s rain comes after the DC area got completely drenched on Friday. According to the National Weather Service, Dulles International Airport reported a record 1.18 inches of precipitation throughout the day. The previous record was 0.92 inches, which was reported in 2016.

Here are the NWS rainfall totals reported for the DC region on Friday:

  • Reagan National Airport: 1 inch
  • Baltimore Washington International Airport: 1.7 inches
  • Dulles International Airport: 1.18 inches

Mother’s Day Sunday will kick off with a few early morning rain showers, making it the perfect morning to treat mom to a homemade breakfast! Rain will eventually clear the area during the morning hours, but cloud cover will remain around the DC area throughout the day before clearing Sunday evening.

Fortunately, the sun will return next week as the DC area is expected to experience a string of several sunny days. Temperatures will also rebound, rising into the 60s and 70s throughout the week.
